Although the old adage of teachers being as sage on stage has been prone to multiple criticisms, many educators still instinctively adopt frontal teaching due to time pressures and lack of effective training. Much research shows that learners learn best by involving themselves in the thinking process where they co-construct knowledge with their peers. This reveals a critical importance to the role of facilitation, where teachers perform as guides on the side to elicit greater student understanding and engagement.
