It started off with wanting to paddle faster. Growing up, Cheryl always thought that she would end up studying engineering, like her parents. Her life changed when she first picked up a paddle with the canoeing team during her junior college days. She was always thinking about how she could improve as a paddler, and that naturally led her to the world of sport science. Through competitive training, she was amazed by the perspective and clarity gained from the sport, "I found out that the more I paddled, the more questions I had. Since Google couldn’t answer my questions, I figured research was the way to go."
